One of the real gems of this area of the country is the Tule Elk Pen at the San Luis National Wildlife Reserve. It is not uncommon at all to see a beautiful herd or two of Tule Elk in the enclosure. The Elk enclosure itself is encircled by an "auto-tour" road which is little more than a dirt road made rougher by the bulldozer tracks - but the rewards are great. We saw this group of 8 females toward sunset near the southern edge of the enclosure and snapped this photograph. The San Luis NWR is a short drive from Los Banos Ca.
