With over 2000 acres of wetland wildlife habitat and over 7000 acres of grasslands and other habitats The Merced National Wildlife Refuge in an expansive area of wild beauty that is very close to Los Banos California. The varied and interesting habitats include permanent wetlands as well as seasonally wet areas.

There are trails that run through the area which allow for a rich birdwatching experience particularly during November when the refuge plays host to the largest population of birds. Throughout the year species come and go and there are literally dozens of species present at various times.

Of particular note, there is an self directed auto tour available and there are large signs that help the visitor to understand what he is observing in different areas.

Hunting is permitted but check with local authorities and make sure it is in season first.

Location & Directions: 8 miles south of Merced on State Highway 59, then 8 miles west on Sandy Mush Rd.
