According to one participant speaking off the DES celebration:

As the story goes, in the 17th century, Queen Isabella of Portugal sold her jewels in order to feed the poor people of her county and allowed one of the girls she fed to wear her crown for a day. The modern crown we use has three parts: the Crown, the Plate, and the Scepter. 3 sections represent the 3 persons of the Trinity. The first festas were scheduled on Pentecost Sunday, which was last week, but with the addition of others, they have been moved to different dates to accomodate people wishing to attend from other towns.
