Icon Explanation:
A favorite -they may all be good in one way or another, but this one is "special"
Most appropriate for teens
and adults Site
geared mostly to young learners
Interactive materials (flash, shockwave, etc.)
Oodles of printables
****************************
 Algebasics What
a wonderful resource for a student learning first year algebra! This site has
a variety of "tutorials" from
basic equations through quadratics. A friendly female voice guides you through
solving each problem and visuals show you what to do, step by step. There are
no practice problems but the lessons are worth taking a look at if your student
needs a refresher or some additional explanation on how to solve a specific type
of problem.
Catch
Ten! An interactive game where you make 10's by having a bear catch number
cubes of differing amounts.
  Big
Brainz This is a free, downloadable program for learning the times tables.
In the game you are a cute little alien that defeats monsters by typing in the
correct answer to the multiplication problems. The graphics and game play are
very well done for something that's free!
There
is a pay version, but you don't need it, the free version covers times tables
through 12's, just not with as many "colorful" levels.
Centre for Innovation
in Mathematics Teaching This U.K. site offers free online PDF math practice
books, lesson plans, and copy masters. These are high quality math programs with
attractive graphics, easy to understand lessons and great practice problems. Use
this as a stand alone program if you are on a budget or consider using it as a
supplement. It seems hard to navigate at first glance but it's worth figuring
out.
Cleave
Books Free teacher resources for site mentioned directly above. These resources
should be useful to any math teacher though. There are lots of printables such
as graph paper, grids, information sheets, games and more.
 Conceptual
Math Materials Scroll to the bottom of the page for math flashcards intended
to teach a baby or very young child conceptual math (instant recognition). We
used materials similar to these and have two children who excel in math. You will
want to check out the book "Teach Your Baby Math" at the bottom of the
page.

Educational Java Programs
Some "hands-on" types of programs that mostly help to teach math. This
site is great if you don't want to invest in things like pattern blocks, base
ten blocks, cuisenaire rods and other math manipulatives. Try them out for free
online before you buy the real thing.
 Explorelearning.com
I have not found any other site that has high school interactive materials and
lessons like this site . It does cost $ BUT you can try out any "gizmo"
for free and there is also a 30 day free trial. The free trial might be worth
it if your older student needs some practice on a particular subject (advanced
math and science are offered). The gizmos are very well designed.
Family
Education Printables There are lots of math printables here. Many of them
are from major textbook publishers like Scott Forseman etc. so they are good quality-wise.

Funny
Fingers Use these interactive
hands and fingers to demonstrate very early counting concepts and "adding
on".
Geometry
Applets Applets help make abstract math more concrete. You should check
these out if your student is learning geometry.
Graph
Paper Lots of different types of free graph (and other kinds of) paper
in PDF form.
Hands
on Math Activities These activities for grades 4-6 make a nice addition
to your curriculum. We pull things like this out for "game day" (Friday). Harcourt
E-lab Practice math concepts for grades 3-6 in an interactive learning
environment.

ICT
Games A wonderful site
with a great selection of free interactive educational games. Most of the games
are most suitable for young learners up through very early elementary.
Interactive
Online Math Lessons
You can register for free and have access to the teacher's resources and all modules
from 2nd grade through trigonometry.
Java
Math Activities Index These activities explain math concepts using Java.
The concepts covered are going to be found in "middle school" math.
There are literally tons of activities and well worth a look to help make math
more "hands-on".
 Jim
Reed's Interactive Math This site has the following topics: numbers/operations,
patterns and relations, shape and space, probability and statistics, algebra,
geometry, and trigonometry. This is an excellent site to find interactive materials
for your teens, but there are also topics for younger students as well.
Math
Applets You are going to love these math applets!!! There are tons of
them for different levels and abilities including younger
children. Math applets help to turn the abstract into something much more concrete.
Math
Games at Topmarks Education Various links to excellent, high quality math
games for a variety of ages.
 Math
Playground "Math Playground is an action-packed educational site for
elementary and middle school students. Practice your math skills, play a logic
game, and have some fun! " There are games to practice all sorts of math
skills (sums, algebraic thinking, word problems, fractions, etc.) as well as some
fun "classic" games like connect four, tangrams, Simon, Sudoku, IQ,
and tons more.
Math-U-See
Drill Page Here is a good, solid drill page for all operations. It's plain
and simple, but effective. You will want to master them "in order" (in other words,
don't move on to the next level until you have the preceding levels down pat).

Mathszone Lots
of high quality interactive math games. Make sure you click on the menu to the
left (after clicking one of the KS1-4 buttons at the top) so you can see all of
the choices appear in the main window.
 Montessori
Games This site has shockwave activities that teach arithmetic, geometry
and culture. Activities are most appropriate for preschoolers through early elementary
(approx. K- 3rd grade). The activities are based on actual hands-on Montessori
materials that can be found in the classroom.
National
Library of Virtual Manipulatives We really like online math manipulatives.
They help make the abstract more concrete. They are also fun for kids to play
with! These range in level from K-12th grade.
Purple
Math " Purplemath's algebra lessons are written with the student
in mind. These lessons emphasize the practicalities rather than the technicalities,
demonstrating dependable techniques, warning of likely "trick" questions, and
pointing out common mistakes. The lessons are cross-referenced to help you find
related material. " We've used this site quite a few times and found the
lessons to be quite helpful.
 Primary
Games These free educational games have a watermark, but are fully functional.
Most of the games are for math, but there are some for language arts.

SAT Math Pro Video Lessons on Demand "SAT
Math Pro uses today's hottest technologies to deliver exceptional practice and
instruction to students preparing for the math component of the SAT. Combining
on demand video instruction with interactive quizzes, SAT Math Pro is a test prep
system that you can count on 24/7. Best of all, SAT Math Pro is a completely free
service. " Watch, learn, test, assess, and practice for FREE. This is
a wonderful resource from a math teacher who wants to help level the playing field
when it comes to the SAT. Your teen NEEDS to check this site out. Ours have and
love it!
Skool.co.uk Wow!
This is a super resource for "older learners" (upper elementary and
beyond -ages 12 to 16 according to the site). There are numerous math and science
modules for students to learn and interact with. Interactive lessons have graphics,
audio, reviews, tests and activities that help to cement learning. You can even
download a special browser so that you can do activities offline. Click one of
the "channels" from the main page and then navigate to the different
sections (Key stage 3 or 4). I am very impressed that the U.K. has such a high
quality free resource for students. *Warning: the biology section contains lessons
/ information on reproduction and sexual intercourse.
 Teaching
Tables There are various games to help learn the times tables. They have
watermarks but are fully functional. One of our sons was particularly fond of
the "Table Mountain" game.
Teach
the Times Tables You don't need to purchase the book available on the
site, just look through the free teaching materials to help with learning the
times tables. We like the creative and memorable stories and pictures that help
make learning painless.
  Thinking
Blocks "Thinking Blocks is an engaging, interactive math tool developed
by classroom teachers to help students learn how to solve multistep word problems.
Using brightly colored blocks, students model the relationships among the components
of each word problem. With the help of a virtual teacher, students walk through
a simple problem solving process and arrive at a solution. When building the models,
students must identify information that is given as well as information that is
unknown. Identifying and solving for an unknown quantity is a key concept in algebra.
Thinking Blocks encourages students to look beyond the surface to discover the
concepts and relationships that are at the core of every math problem." This
site is A MUST SEE if you are using Singapore math!!!! Solving multistep
word problems is something everyone should know. This site will help you learn
how.
USA
Mathematical Talent Search "The USA Mathematical Talent Search (USAMTS)
is a free mathematics competition open to all United States middle and high school
students." This one is tough, but if you have a math talented youngster you
might want to look into it. Can you say "scholarship"? :-)
Using
Legos to Teach Algebra Six lessons to help make algebra a little more
understandable by using Legos. What a great idea!
Visual
Fractions You really need to SEE fractions to understand them. This site
helps teach fractions in a visual manner.
Worksheet
Factory Lite " Need just the Facts? The free Basic Facts Worksheet
Factory can generate worksheets that will provide students with the practice they
need to become proficient in the basic math operations. " ******************************* The
