Welcome
to our Interactive games and teaching site links! Most
children love interactive sites and games. Sometimes it's easier to learn or practice
something by "playing". The sites listed below cover a multitude
of subjects but what they all have in common is some type of interactive element.
Most of the sites below
will also be listed in their specific categories (math, language arts, etc.).
We'll be adding more soon! ****************************
Icon Explanation:
A favorite -they may all be good in one way or another, but this one is "special"
Most appropriate for teens
and adults Site
geared mostly to young learners
Interactive materials (flash, shockwave, etc.)
Oodles of printables
(For
this page I won't be including the interactive icon) **************************** Ben's
Games Interactive games like a U.S. States puzzle, a maze, interactive
coloring and more. Click on the age categories at the top of the page to go to
other interactive activities. These are not the most sophisticated games, but
they'll do in a pinch. Bonus.com
Lots of games here, but be aware there is advertising aimed at kids. This is a
very "commercial" feeling site and many of the games are NOT educational. Brainpop
Lots of fun and informative movies and related activities for science, math, English,
history, health and more are available at Brainpop! Our kids love this site. Be
aware that you may not agree with some of the agendas (one of the movies was "subtly"
anti-firearm and evolution is mentioned in the science category). This site is
a subscription service, but you can have a free 14-day trial and some of
the movies are always free in each main category.
CBeebies
Fun & Games Interactive
games based on U.K. shows and children's well known characters like Clifford.
Games are simple for the "younger crowd".
City
Creator This site lets you "build" cities. It kind of reminds
me of "online" Colorforms. There are little buildings, people, trees,
backgrounds and so on to move around and design. It's lots of fun and FREE!
Dositey
Various interactive games and also some worksheets available for grades K - 8.
More activities are available for the younger grades. Eats
Shoots and Leaves Punctuation Game This is a great interactive game to
practice punctuation!
Educational Java Programs
Some "hands-on" types of programs that mostly help to teach math. This
site is great if you don't want to invest in things like pattern blocks, base
ten blocks, cuisenaire rods and other math manipulatives. Try them out for free
online before you buy the real thing.
Explorelearning.com
I have not found any other site that has high school interactive materials and
lessons like this site . It does cost $ BUT you can try out any "gizmo"
for free and there is also a 30 day free trial. The free trial might be worth
it if your older student needs some practice on a particular subject (advanced
math and science are offered). The gizmos are very well designed.
Funny
Fingers Use these interactive
hands and fingers to demonstrate very early counting concepts and "adding
on".
Funschool
Lots of different games -some are educational and some are "arcade".
The games are designed for preschoolers through about 6th grade. Be aware that
there is advertising aimed at kids and parents. Geography
Quizzes One of our children really loves this site and has learned a lot
from it. There are interactive geography games that cover the entire world. Play
one game until it's mastered and then move on! Most of the games are in a puzzle
format (drag the pieces or names where they go). You start out "learning"
by clicking and then you begin to apply your knowledge through subsequent levels.
You don't just learn country or state names either; there are capitals to be learned
as well as mountain ranges, rivers and other bodies of water! The graphics aren't
beautiful and the sounds aren't "snazzy" but this is an excellent, free
site to practice and hone your geography skills.
ICT
Games A wonderful site with a great selection of free interactive educational
games. Most of the games are most suitable for young learners up through very
early elementary.
I
Know That.com These are very nice educational games. Our son said I should
list this site as the "very best" of them all, hence the heart icon.
There is free registration but you can also access the games without registering.
Be aware that there is advertising on this site and each game will prompt you
to register with personal information (name, email, etc.).
King's
Call -An Interactive Web Adventure Read the story and go through the animated
adventure. Learning
Box This site has all sorts of interactive goodies including an interactive
online Etch-a-sketch! Literacy
Center Education Network These games are for really little tikes. ABC's,
shapes, colors, numbers and the like in English, Spanish, German and French.

Literactive "Teaching Children to
Read" " Welcome to Literactive Literactive is the leading provider
of reading material for pre-school, kindergarten and grade 1 students available
online. The program is comprised of carefully levelled guided readers, comprehensive
phonic activities and a wealth of supplemental reading material which gradually
develop a child's reading skills in a sequential and enjoyable manner. :
This
site is awesome. The activities are very nice and high quality. There are lots
of guided, interactive lessons, games, e-books, poetry, activities and more. You
can also download and print out some nice black line masters. Little
Fingers Games Very nice interactive games for preschool through about grade
3, focusing mostly on the little ones. There are games for numbers, the alphabet,
time, money, shapes and more.
Math
Games at Topmarks Education Various links to excellent, high quality math
games for a variety of ages.
Mathszone Lots
of high quality interactive math games. Make sure you click on the menu to the
left (after clicking one of the KS1-4 buttons at the top) so you can see all of
the choices appear in the main window.
Montessori
Games
This site has shockwave activities that teach arithmetic, geometry and culture.
Activities are most appropriate for preschoolers through early elementary (approx.
K- 3rd grade). The activities are based on actual hands-on Montessori materials
that can be found in the classroom.
Mr.
Nussbaum Lots of educational Flash games in different categories. There
are ads. Museum
of Costume Dress-up Game Choose a year and then choose items to dress
up the character. Try to choose the correct items for the time period.
NFGL Games This
site has some nice primary games and some "interactive" accompaniments
to songs such as "Five Little Speckled Frogs". There are also activities
for early phonics, math and science. What is even greater is that the games are
downloadable for free! This is a great site for little ones.
Number
Bonds This nice game gives excellent practice in number bonds that make
the number 10.
Primary
Games These free educational games have a watermark, but are fully functional.
Most of the games are for math, but there are some for language arts.
Skool.co.uk Wow!
Wow! WOW! This is a super resource for "older learners" (upper elementary
and beyond -ages 12 to 16 according to the site). There are numerous math and
science modules for students to learn and interact with. Interactive lessons have
graphics, audio, reviews, tests and activities that help to cement learning. You
can even download a special browser so that you can do activities offline. Click
one of the "channels" from the main page and then navigate to the different
sections (Key stage 3 or 4). I am very impressed that the U.K. has such a high
quality free resource for students. *Warning: the biology section contains lessons
/ information on reproduction and sexual intercourse.
Shark
Numbers Count the tens
and units, then select the correct number bubble. If you are correct a dolphin
will jump over your boat but if you're wrong a shark will take a chunk out of
it! Great practice for recognition of tens and units!
Soccer
Subtraction A very nicely
made game that teaches simple subtraction.
******************************* The
Internet changes daily so you never know if a site that is here today might be
"gone" tomorrow. We suggest you save materials you want to use in the
future to your hard drive (if it doesn't interfere with the copyright). Also,
we can't predict what might change on a site or what advertising might be present.
Surf at your own risk! Please report any bad links
to me (or inappropriate materials and / or advertising)! P.S.
Some of the links have stuff that is good, fun, informative, etc. for mom too,
not just the kids! |
