June 26 - JUNE 26 - SECOND AMMENDMENT DAY June 26th is Second Ammendment Day - the day that commemorates the United States Supreme Court's historic ruling in a case called "DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA ET AL. v. HELLER" which struck down a handgun ban and established once and for all the precedent and rule of law that protects individual freedom of the right to keep and bear arms for citizens of the United States.

The supreme court had never before conclusively interpreted the Second Amendment since the ammendment's original ratification in 1791. The 2nd amendment reads: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

Many people and politicians had come to the wrong conclusion that because of the first clause in the ammendment that it was meant only to cover a 'regulated militia'. This is not so nor is that interpretation even gramatically correct.

On June 26, 2008 the United States Supreme Court Ruled against those who would take liberty from Americans saying: "The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home." thus overturning a handgun ban in Washington DC.

The Supreme Court Stated "The Amendment’s prefatory clause announces a purpose, but does not limit or expand the scope of the second part, the operativeclause. The operative clause’s text and history demonstrate that itconnotes an individual right to keep and bear arms."

This historic decission is celebrated by Americans who believe in personal liberty and ALL of the rights granted to us in the constitution of the United States Of America particularly the first 10 Ammendments known as the Bill of Rights.

You may read historic decission in full here: http://www.supremecourtus.gov/opinions/07pdf/07-290.pdf
