A little history regarding our Smorgasbord: The first Smorgasbord
dinner was held on October 18, 1987, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Beam. It
was from this gathering that the idea to open the dinner to the community was
born. Since then, St. John's has hosted this dinner annually for the community,
usually held on the second Tuesday in October. This dinner has become quite popular
and sells out each year. A wide variety of foods from which to choose is offered.
In typical Scandinavian fashion, three groupings of foods will be available. First,
a major feature of Scandinavian eating is the "cold table". literally,
a table bearing many different cold items from which guests can choose, returning
as often as they like. Among the colds items we serve are: pickled beets, pickled
cucumbers, coleslaw or green bean salad, pickled apples, a spice fruit tray, deviled
eggs, cheese, tomatoes in oil/vinegar, sweet and dill pickles, Jell-O and pickled
fish. In addition to the "cold table"., we serve an array of hot dishes
including: roast pork, Swedish meatballs, potatoes with white gravy and peas,
cabbage rolls, beans and cabbage. Finally, after a hearty feast, one can relax
and enjoy rice pudding and Swedish pancakes with apricot or lingonberry jam. A
variety of cookies are served with what else but hot, strong coffee.

October 12-14 - Henry Miller Wild West Weekend Click
here for the official website.
"German immigrant Henry Miller founded
Los Banos in 1890; it was incorporated in 1907. The Henry Miller Wild West
Weekend is the Grand Finale to six months of celebrating Los Banos’ Centennial.
It will be host to the first California State Championship of Cowboy Fast Draw,
an exciting new sport that has women and men shooting authentic .45 caliber single
action six shooters (wax bullets) at 24” round targets from a holstered position.
It’s as exciting as dropping the clutch on a dragster, and as addictive as a video
game. Shooters must wear period costumes of late 1800’s.
The general public
is encouraged to dress in cultural heritage of the 1890’s. Food vendors and dry
goods vendors will be asked to dress in 1890’s garb and to create 1890’s era booths.
There is no doubt about it, our event will truly be the Best of the West!"
